Teaching Practicum

EST 475: Undergraduate Teaching Practicum
Students assist the faculty in teaching by conducting recitation or laboratory sections that supplement a lecture course. The student receives regularly scheduled supervision from the faculty instructor. May be used as an open elective only and repeated once.

Prerequisites: U4 standing; a minimum g.p.a. of 3.00 in all Stony Brook courses and a grade of B or better in the course in which the student is to assist; permission of department
SBC: EXP+ 3 credits

Undergraduate and Graduate Teaching Assistantships at Stony Brook University and SUNY Korea.

Objectives

1) Ensure all aspects of the classroom are suitable for the learning and teaching environment: lights, windows, AC, computer, microphones, sound levels, projectors, screens down, doors (open, closed). Is it the right room for the class? Managing the equipment and the room is essential for class success.

2) Take attendance by either calling out the names and/or having them report to the TAs when they arrive. Set up and manage the spreadsheet with the instructor and other TAs.

3) Work with the instructor to prepare several multiple-choice, True/False, and short-answer questions from class lectures. Help proctor tests.

4) Help facilitate groups and organize group work by randomizing student names or parsing student choices.

5) Help students find research and course materials on Brightspace, the library, and the Web.

6) Provide additional explanations to students on class materials or group topics.

7) Provide feedback to the instructor from students. For instance, moving too quickly through lecture materials.

8) Adhering to strict ethical standards on academic dishonesty and power relations, maintaining confidentiality on student attendance and grades, and demonstrating professionalism in interactions with students, colleagues, and instructors.

9) Strive to speak in English to students but recognize that at some times it may be useful to explain something to a student in another language.

10) Be a bridge for students needing assistance from various student services offered on campus.
